Every document shredder has a cutting mechanism that is automatically activated when a sheet of paper (or several sheets) is (are) inserted into the corresponding slot. Some document shredders have to be switched on first, others work at all times as they operate in stand-by mode and are equipped with a sensor that automatically detects the paper. This is also the case with IDEAL document shredders. This means that as soon as paper touches the feed slot, the cutting unit starts shredding. With both principles, however, the blades stop as soon as the sensor no longer detects a sheet.

Shredders are usually driven by electric motors. High-quality devices usually have a chain drive. In contrast, inexpensive devices are usually driven by gears, which are often only made of plastic. These devices are not suitable for heavy-duty use. If a lot of documents need to be shredded, the document shredder should have a chain drive.

This is completely different and depends on the respective device class (device size), the cutting variant (strip cut or particle cut) and the security level. The smallest IDEAL document shredder model can handle 5-6 sheets (model IDEAL 2245 CC, security level P-4, 80 m/m2) at the same time. The largest IDEAL machine can shred complete folders including the hanger mechanism and can shred up to 600 sheets (model IDEAL 5009-2 CC, security level P-2, 80 g/m2) at once.

A distinction is made between paper shredders with strip cut and particle cut (cross cut) models. The strip-cut devices shred the fed data carriers into unreadable paper strips. The strip cut is recommended for normal security requirements and offers the advantage of a higher sheet output compared to the particle cut (cross cut).
Device variants with particle cut (cross cut) offer higher data security in accordance with DIN 66399 and are important for higher security requirements, for example for the destruction of personal data. Compared to the strip cut, the volume of waste is significantly reduced as the strips are also separated into short particles, which means longer emptying intervals.

In Germany, there is a standardization of document shredder results according to DIN standard 66399, which provides a precise framework for how the documents assigned to a certain security level must be shredded. In general, the higher the security level, the smaller the shredded particles of the respective data carrier. A distinction is made between seven DIN security levels.

The protection requirements of the data are classified into three protection classes in accordance with DIN 66399. The type of data managed is decisive in determining the protection requirement.

Protection class 1:
Normal protection requirement for internal data (normal correspondence, advertising letters, personalized advertising, direct mail) with security levels 1-3.

Protection class 2:
High protection requirement for confidential data (financial accounting/personnel data, balance sheets, offers, pay slips, tax documents) with security levels 3-5.

Protection class 3:

In addition to paper, numerous other data carriers are also used in our age of communication, which also need to be taken into account. DIN 66399 distinguishes between different data carrier classifications, which also take into account the size of the information presentation on the data carriers.
