Efficiency meets precision in modern print finishing

In modern digital print production, cutting is far more than just the final step in the process. Precision, speed, and intuitive operation have a direct impact on productivity, lead times, operating costs, and ultimately the quality that reaches the customer. Especially in fast-paced online print environments, all processes must function reliably: day after day, order after order.

This is exactly where the IDEAL THE 56 stack cutter comes in. The programmable cutting system combines professional cutting performance with intelligent digital workflow functions and has been developed to make demanding cutting tasks faster, more precise, and significantly easier. With the modern CUT-CONTROL system, a tablet-style multi-touch display, and optimized automation functions, the THE 56 represents a new generation of compact cutting systems.

For the Amsterdam-based online print provider Print & Bind, these features have become an important part of daily production. The company manufactures brochures, books, calendars, catalogs, and a variety of bound print products entirely in-house. In a highly standardized production environment with demanding lead times, Print & Bind relies on efficient and stable finishing processes throughout the entire workflow. Stanley Herf, Production Manager, and Marijn Rabelink, Senior Developer at Print & Bind, report on their experiences with the IDEAL THE 56 in daily production. The stack cutter has been in daily use there for almost a year now. “Compared to previous IDEAL stack cutters, the THE 56 works noticeably faster and more efficiently in everyday production,” reports Stanley.

Company building

Intuitive technology for real-world production

A key feature of the THE 56 stack cutter is its operating concept. Instead of confronting users with unnecessary complexity, the machine focuses on intuitive operation and clear user guidance. The integrated 15.6-inch multi-touch display was specifically developed for familiar tablet-style use. Simple touch and swipe gestures allow for convenient control, while all important cutting parameters and program steps remain clearly visible at all times.

For Print & Bind, this ease of use is particularly important, as accessibility plays a central role in the company's production concept. “The machine must be easy to operate and accessible to everyone, as we also employ students and people with difficult access to the labor market. It must be understandable and operable for everyone,” explains Marijn.

The intuitive user interface and simplified workflow logic significantly reduce training requirements and support operators in working safely and efficiently. “The system is very user-friendly. For example, cutting positions can be marked very easily by simply placing a cross,” adds Marijn.

The newly designed position of the control display also contributes noticeably to operating comfort. “The new tablet is located directly in the operator’s field of vision. This works very well and increases efficiency,” says Stanley.

Precision and productivity without compromise

The IDEAL THE 56 stack cutter was designed to combine high cutting precision with increased production speed. Compared to other stack cutters and previous generations, the system offers significantly faster pressing and cutting cycles, higher clamping pressure, and accelerated backgauge movement. In practical production, these improvements ensure smoother workflows, shorter setup times, and lower operating costs.

At Print & Bind, the machine is in active use for about five to six hours a day, mainly for cutting cards and loose sheets. The production range extends from small formats starting at 5 × 5 cm to 450 × 450 mm, mainly in SRA3 and SRA4. Paper weights from 70 to 350 g/m² are processed. Especially in standardized online print production, repeatability and a consistently high cutting quality are crucial. “The machine works reliably and delivers the quality we are used to,” says Stanley. The combination of programmable automation, intuitive job processing, and reliable mechanical precision enables high productivity without compromising on quality.

Reliable operation meets high operating comfort

In addition to productivity, the THE 56 was developed with a special focus on ergonomics and operator support. Features such as the precision drive for manual fine adjustment of the backgauge, programmable cutting sequences, and the integrated CUT-CONTROL system make daily work significantly easier.

Intelligent assistance functions, integrated help guides, and guided workflows further support operators in minimizing errors and achieving consistent production results. For Print & Bind, reliability in continuous operation also plays a decisive role. “The quality of the THE 56 has proven itself very well even in continuous use. The machine requires little maintenance and is easy to operate,” says Marijn.

Work safety is also of central importance in the company's production environment. The comprehensive safety concept of the THE 56 combines IR safety monitoring, two-hand operation, and intelligent safety systems, thus ensuring a safe and at the same time user-friendly working environment. “The safety level is comparable to the previous models and feels familiar,” explains Stanley.

When asked how the machine can be summarized in just three words, the answer is prompt: “Stable, fast, user-friendly.”

A strong solution for modern print finishing

At Print & Bind, the IDEAL THE 56 stack cutter has established itself as a reliable and easily accessible cutting solution for the demands of daily production. The company particularly appreciates the balanced ratio of performance, operating comfort, and cost-effectiveness. “We would definitely recommend the machine, especially due to its very good price-performance ratio and simple operation. It is versatile,” says Stanley.

At the same time, the company sees further potential in automation and cloud-based workflow integration for JDF- or XML-controlled production environments. “There is still further potential for improvement in the area of automation,” notes Stanley. When asked whether Print & Bind would choose the machine again, the answer is nonetheless clear. “Especially for standard paper cutting work, it would definitely be a good choice again,” says Marijn.

With the combination of intelligent workflow functions, intuitive operation, and reliable cutting performance, the IDEAL THE 56 demonstrates how modern stack cutters can support both productivity and user-friendliness in demanding production environments in the graphic arts industry.
